What is a used car loan?

A used car loan lets you finance a pre-owned car from a dealer, an auction or a private seller, with repayments spread over a set term. Greenside Finance are Perth-based finance brokers comparing 40+ lenders for used car loans, and we lend across Western Australia and Australia-wide.

Who do we help with used car loans?

  • PAYG employees, casuals, contractors and FIFO workers buying a car for personal use.
  • Self-employed buyers who want a personal car loan rather than a business loan.
  • Business owners buying a used car, van or ute mainly for work. That's usually a business car loan (chattel mortgage), and we arrange it too: see business car loans, or ute finance for a ute.
  • Buyers with a good credit history who want a low rate and a straightforward process.
  • Buyers with past defaults or a thin credit file. These narrow the options but don't rule you out: some lenders specialise in them, usually at a higher cost.
  • Buying from a private seller? See private sale car loans. Working a roster? See FIFO car loans. Buying new? See our car loans hub.

Buying mainly for business use? Lenders assess a business car loan on your ABN, GST registration and business income rather than payslips. Tell us when you ask for a quote and we'll compare those lenders too.

What lenders look at for a used car

FactorWhat it means for you
Car ageMost lenders limit how old the car can be at the end of the loan. Older and higher-kilometre cars have fewer lenders and usually cost more.
Income and employmentLenders look at how stable your income is. Full-time, casual, contract and self-employed income are all assessed, with different rules at each lender.
Credit historyA good credit history opens the whole panel. Defaults, late payments and many recent enquiries narrow it, and the rate is usually higher.
DepositSome lenders finance the full price. A deposit or trade-in can widen your choices and lower your repayments.
Where you buyDealer purchases are accepted widely. Private sales and auctions are accepted by many lenders, but not all.

Documents checklist

  • Driver's licence
  • Recent payslips, or BAS and bank statements if self-employed
  • Recent bank statements showing your income
  • A list of your assets and debts
  • Details of the car: the dealer's invoice or listing, make, model, year, kilometres and VIN or rego
  • Proof of address, if the lender asks

Buying mainly for business? You'll also need your ABN and GST details; the documents for each option are on business car loans.

Missing some of these? Call us anyway. Requirements differ by lender and we'll tell you what yours needs.

How it works with Greenside

  1. Tell us about the car and you. The price, where you're buying, and a few details about your income. A two-minute quote request or a phone call.
  2. We compare lenders. A Perth broker checks the 40+ lender panel and explains the options, including term, fees and the rate on offer.
  3. We check it suits you. We ask about your needs and budget, and we won't recommend a loan that doesn't fit.
  4. You choose, we apply. We prepare the application, you sign electronically, and the lender pays the seller directly. Then you collect the car.

Example

Illustrative scenario based on common enquiries, not a specific client. Amounts are examples only. A Perth nurse on a permanent PAYG income wanted a five-year-old hatchback priced around $25,000, with a small trade-in. A good credit history meant most of the panel could consider her, so we compared several lenders on cost and fees rather than just the headline rate. A shorter term raised her repayment but cut the total interest, and she chose the option that fitted her budget.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a used car loan with bad credit?

Often yes, though your options narrow and the rate is usually higher. Some lenders specialise in past defaults and thin credit files. We tell you plainly what's realistic before any application goes in.

How old can the car be?

It depends on the lender. Many cap the car's age at the end of the loan, and a few go further for older or classic cars. Tell us the car and we'll check which lenders would consider it.

Do I need a deposit for a used car loan?

Not always. Some lenders finance the full price for borrowers with a good credit history. A deposit or trade-in can widen your options and lower your repayments.

Can I buy from a private seller or an auction?

Yes. Many lenders fund private and auction purchases, though a few only fund dealer sales. We run a PPSR check, arrange payout of any finance owing, and the lender pays the seller directly. See private sale car loans.

How long does approval take?

Some lenders decide within hours when your documents are complete, and others take a day or two. We can't promise an outcome, but we'll tell you what's needed to avoid delays.

Can I get a used car loan if I'm self-employed?

Yes. For a car mainly for personal use, lenders assess self-employed income with BAS, bank statements or an accountant's letter, depending on the lender. If the car is mainly for business, a business car loan may fit better, and we arrange those too. See low doc loans for the business option that relies on your declaration of income instead of full financials or tax returns.

Does requesting a quote affect my credit score?

No. Getting a quote won’t affect your credit score. A credit enquiry is only listed if you decide to go ahead with an application.

Which is better, a used car loan or a personal loan?

A car loan is secured against the car, which often means a lower rate. A personal loan is unsecured and more flexible but can cost more. We'll compare both for your situation.
