| Factor | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| ABN and GST age | Light trucks and rigids: some lenders from a new ABN, more from 12 months, the widest choice around 2 years. Prime movers: lenders usually want several years of ABN and GST. |
| Industry experience | Years driving or operating, plus a contract or work letter from the prime contractor, carry real weight for new owner-drivers. |
| Previous truck finance | A paid or current loan on a similar truck ("comparable credit") opens up prime mover lenders. |
| Property | Owning property is the biggest lever. Some lenders won't fund transport operators without it. |
| Deposit | Without property, expect 10–20% deposit or trade-in at many lenders. |
| Truck age | Many lenders fund trucks to around 20–25 years old at the end of the loan. Older units may need an inspection or a shorter term. |
| Credit | A clean file opens the panel. Defaults narrow it. |
Low doc:
Full doc: all of the above plus two years of tax returns or financials and ATO notices of assessment.
Low doc suits established operators (usually 2+ years of ABN and GST, ideally with property) whose tax returns lag behind. Full doc suits prime movers, bigger amounts, multi-truck deals and newer businesses, and can earn sharper pricing. More detail: low doc loans.
Illustrative scenario based on common enquiries, not a specific client. An experienced driver leaving a Perth earthmoving company to subcontract with a tipper, on a new ABN, no property, wanted a used tipper for around $120,000. A new ABN with no property knocks out most of the panel, so the deal rested on a work letter from the prime contractor, his years of driving, and a deposit from savings. Our advice: start with a rigid tipper rather than a prime mover, build two years of ABN history, then step up.
It's harder than a rigid or tipper. Prime mover lenders usually want several years of ABN and GST, property backing and a previous truck loan. New owner-drivers often start with a rigid, or bring a larger deposit.
Yes. The lender pays the seller in any state. We run a PPSR check first, and you'll need an inspection to register it in WA.
Yes, many lenders fund auction purchases. Get pre-approved before auction day so you know your limit, and send us the docket straight after the sale.
Often, yes, if bought together. Some lenders also offer facilities that cover several trucks and trailers.
Many lenders fund trucks up to around 20–25 years old at the end of the loan. Older trucks may need an inspection, a shorter term or a specialist lender.
Property owners with an established ABN often don't. Without property, many lenders want 10–20%, and some won't fund transport operators at all.
Usually, but break costs vary widely between lenders. If you might sell or upgrade within a few years, tell us so we pick a lender with lower break costs.
